Pons dominates FP2 in Barcelona, as Frers goes quickest in Iron Cup class
Newly-crowned Blancpain GT Sports Club Overall champion Anthony Pons has clocked the fastest time in the second free practice held at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The #72 Mercedes-AMG GT3's best effort resulted in a 1:50.482 flyer. Meanwhile, Klaus Dieter Frers (#3 Artega Rennsport Ferrari 488 GT3) outpaced Iron Cup title rival Stephen Earle (#111 Kessel Racing Ferrari 458 Italia GT3).
Boutsen Ginion's Claude-Yves Gosselin set the early pace aboard the #4 Lamborghini Gallardo Extenso R-EX but it was soon the returning Nicolas Vandierendonck top of the tables at the wheel of the #63 Shipex By Ombra Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3.
Coming off his maiden Blancpain GT Sports Club win at the Hungaroring, AF Corse's Patrick Van Glabeke then surged ahead with the #488 Ferrari 488 GT3. The Belgian ace would be dethroned in the latter stages when Pons came charging through.
That means Van Glabeke slotted into P2, ahead of Vandierendonck. Pons' AKKA ASP team-mate Mauro Ricci, who had topped Friday's opening session secured fourth pace, while early pacesetter Gosselin eventually claimed sixth behind Luigi Lucchini (#7 BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 458 Italia GT3).
In the Iron Cup class, Frers edged class points leader Earle, with HTP Motorsport’s Willem Paulys de Pundert completing the top three at the wheel of the #39 Mercedes-AMG GT3.
The all-important 20-minute Qualifying session, which determines the grid order for Saturday afternoon's Qualifying Race, takes place at 13:35, local time. You can follow the official live timing on our website
