Leimer fastest in red-flagged FP2, as Earle claims Iron Cup bragging rights
Autovitesse Garage R.Affolter’s Cédric Leimer and his #963 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 went fastest in the second free practice for this weekend’s Silverstone round of the Blancpain GT Sports Club, although drivers coud only complete one flying lap before a red flag brought an early end to FP2.
With heavens opening minutes before the start of the session, the 22 Blancpain GT Sports Club runners and riders were forced to tiptoe around the 5.891km circuit and Fons Scheltema’s #77 AF Corse-run Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 stopped on track, thus triggering a first interruption.
Silverstone was back under green flag conditions in a few minutes' time, with drivers keen to rack up the miles and fine-tune their setups ahead of this afternoon’s all-important 20-minute Qualifying session, which determines the grid for Saturday’s 25-minute Qualifying Race.
But barely had they completed their first flying lap that Daniel Voigt’s #18 HP Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 caused a second red flag, which would ultimately signal the end of FP2.
Having clocked a best time of 2:32.739, Leimer finished 1.416s ahead of last year’s Blancpain GT Sports Club runner-up Nico Vandierendonck on the #63 Shipex by Ombra Racing-entered Huracan. Third quickest was Misano Qualifying Race winner Anthony Pons, competing at the wheel of AKKA ASP’s #72 Mercedes AMG-GT3.
Before triggering the session-ending red flag, Vogt had hoisted himself up to P4, while Christoph Ulrich rounded the Overall top five aboard AF Corse’s #51 Ferrari F458 Italia GT3.
In the Iron Cup class, current points leader Stephen Earle ended up with the fastest marks amongst the Blancpain GT Sports pilots aged 60 and over, ahead of AF Corse’s Louis-Philippe Soenen and his #50 Ferrari 488 GT3.
